According to the latest data from the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, the country welcomed 17.5 million international visitors in 2024, ranking as the third most-visited destination in Southeast Asia, just behind Malaysia (25 million) and Thailand (35 million). Particularly remarkable is the pace at which tourism is rebounding post-pandemic: the 2024 Travel & Tourism Development Index by the World Economic Forum notes that in 2018, international arrivals reached nearly 16 million, dropped to around 3.5 million during the global restrictions of 2020–2022, and have now returned to pre-Covid levels, thanks to the full restoration of international flights to the country. As reported by Jing Daily, Vietnam already recorded nearly 4 million international arrivals in the first two months of 2025, marking a 30.2% increase compared to the same period last year.

Several factors are driving this momentum. First and foremost, accessibility: since 2021, the first direct flight between the United States and Vietnam (San Francisco – Ho Chi Minh City) has been operational, and by 2026, the new Long Thanh International Airport—set to serve Ho Chi Minh City—will open, increasing the country’s capacity to accommodate up to 25 million visitors.

In addition, 2023 saw the implementation of new e-visa policies allowing stays of up to 90 days, along with visa exemptions for over a dozen key countries, including Italy, France, and South Korea.

Vietnam’s positioning as a new premium destination in Asia is also being strengthened by the opening of high-end hotels such as the Regent Phu Quoc, Capella Hanoi, and JW Marriott Saigon, with brands like Ritz-Carlton Reserve and Park Hyatt in development. The 2024 expansion of the Michelin Guide further highlighted the local food scene, attracting a more sophisticated audience eager for new experiences.

Jing Daily also reports that, according to Mike Nguyen, founder of luxury travel agency Ansova Travel, demand in the luxury segment is led by the U.S. and India—the latter especially in the wedding tourism sector, with over half a million arrivals (+297% vs. 2019)—as well as by affluent Chinese tourists seeking safer alternatives to Thailand following concerning news reports.

Political cooperation between China and Vietnam is also gaining ground, particularly in student tourism. In a recent meeting, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Vietnamese President Tô Lâm discussed strategies to leverage their land and sea connectivity. China is also planning “Red Study Tours” for young Vietnamese to explore their shared cultural heritage.

The meeting also highlighted that in 2024, Vietnam welcomed 3.74 million Chinese tourists—a 114% increase from the previous year—while in Q1 2025 alone, 1.58 million arrivals were recorded, up 178% year-on-year. Currently, there are nearly 400 round-trip flights operating weekly between the two countries, and around 23,000 Vietnamese students are studying in China.

At Twissen, we have observed that Vietnam is establishing itself as one of the most promising international tourism destinations, with a significant rise in arrivals. The combination of an expanding luxury offering, favorable visa policies, and growing air infrastructure creates the ideal environment to attract high-end travelers. Moreover, the country’s increasing cooperation with China further fuels inbound tourism. In this context, Vietnam has a unique opportunity to position itself as a premium destination in Asia—ready to welcome visitors from around the world and fully realize its tourism potential.

Chinese outbound tourism is showing signs of recovery in 2025, with rising spending and strong demand for premium experiences. This article explores key trends, emerging destinations, and new opportunities to attract an increasingly selective audience.

At the beginning of the year, a recent report by TravelDaily titled “China Tourism Consumption Trend Insights: Reviewing 2024, Looking Ahead to 2025” forecasted a recovery of outbound Chinese tourism in 2025, with an increase in spending, particularly from high-income groups seeking premium travel experiences. In fact, in 2024, tourism expenditure increased steadily, with 36.86% of respondents reporting that they spent up to 30% more compared to 2023.

China Travel News also reports that in February 2025, 722,700 travelers from mainland China visited Japan, taking advantage of the Spring Festival, one of the peak periods for Chinese tourist demand. In January and February 2025, Japan welcomed 1.703 million Chinese tourists, nearly double the number compared to the same period in 2024. These figures are even more significant when considered against the backdrop of the slow economic recovery in China. Japan has benefited from this, albeit slow, recovery thanks to an enhanced air network with more connections between China and airports such as Narita and Fukuoka, an attractive winter offer, and effective positioning during traditional Chinese holidays.

However, not all destinations are benefiting. Thailand, historically one of the favorite destinations for Chinese tourists due to affordable prices, geographic proximity, and favorable visa policies, is showing worrying signs following a recent case of negative news (unfortunately followed by the recent Myanmar earthquake), which has generated a wave of distrust among Chinese tourists. According to data from the Thai Hotels Association, in January alone, 4,572 hotel nights were canceled by Chinese tourists, with 2,001 of those in Bangkok. The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT), in collaboration with the Thailand-China Tourism Association, has launched a program to define “China-friendly tourism standards,” aiming to restore trust. Around 200 travel agencies have already been approved as compliant with these new safety criteria.

Jing Daily reports that new dynamics are also emerging with high-end Chinese tourists, the so-called High-Net-Worth Individuals (HNWIs), who now represent an increasingly significant portion of the outbound market. According to the 2025 Hurun Chinese Luxury Consumer Survey, Chinese HNWIs have now prioritized travel above all other expenditures, marking a clear shift towards experiential luxury, with average annual travel spending reaching up to around €28,500 (225,000 RMB) for the wealthiest individuals, 41% of whom report traveling abroad twice a year.

In particular, Chinese HNWIs are seeking thematic experiences during their travels: from sunny beaches (12%) to luxury resorts (11%), and historical sites (13%). The most popular international destinations continue to be the Maldives, France, and Dubai, with the latter seeing a strong rise (from 14% in 2020 to 34% in 2025). In Asia, in addition to traditional destinations like Sanya and Hainan, Singapore has seen a significant rise in popularity (32%, compared to 23% in 2022).

At Twissen, we have noticed that despite domestic uncertainties and the turbulent geopolitical moment related to the “trade war,” the desire to travel among Chinese tourists remains strong. However, their choices are leaning towards easily accessible destinations with direct flights, safety, good organization, cultural warmth, and a clear thematic offer. Destinations can attract this target through premium experiences, capitalizing on key moments in the Chinese calendar, such as Lunar New Year or Golden Week, or by taking advantage of the growing interest in luxury tourism.

Martina Baldo

She graduated in Intercultural Development of Tourism Systems and she has a passion for foreign languages and cultures.

In recent years, the Arctic has grown in popularity, attracting 1.2 million visitors to Russia, thanks to the rise of cruises and tourism programs. However, sustainability and climate change pose challenges. While Russia focuses on growth, the European Arctic implements responsible strategies, like restrictions in Svalbard and new infrastructure in Greenland, to balance development and environmental protection.

In recent years, interest in Arctic tourism in Russia has grown significantly. As reported by Tass – Russia News Agency, travelers are drawn to the region for its exotic appeal, rich culture, and indigenous traditions.

According to the Russian Ministry for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, around 1.2 million people visited the Russian Arctic—less than 1% of all domestic tourists. This highlights a vast growth potential, with projections suggesting that visitor numbers could double thanks to the expansion of cruises and new tourism programs in Arctic regions. However, despite rising demand, the current tourism infrastructure still struggles to fully meet travelers’ expectations.

Beyond the domestic market, Russia is also aiming to promote Arctic tourism internationally. The “Year of Arctic Tourism” project, launched in 2024 by the Association of Russian Tour Operators (ATOR) in collaboration with the tour operator Polar Travel Club, seeks to showcase the Russian Arctic’s tourism potential to global travelers.

European Arctic tourism is also experiencing increased demand, leading to the creation of promotional initiatives such as Visit Arctic Europe (VAE), involving Finland, Sweden, and Norway. This project unites over 120 companies and tour operators, with a budget of €12.8 million, partly funded by the EU Interreg Nord program. VAE focuses on sustainable tourism, both socially and environmentally, aiming to make the Arctic a competitive and year-round destination while preserving its fragile ecosystem.

As reported by Osservatorio Artico, climate change is significantly impacting Arctic tourism. Ice melting has opened access to previously unreachable areas, increasing traffic from both small boats and large cruise ships. While a longer summer season benefits tour operators by improving accessibility, shorter winters affect snow-based activities like skiing and sledding. Additionally, extreme natural events—such as avalanches and storm surges—make organizing safe excursions increasingly complex.

The Arctic presents a wide variety of cultures and tourism approaches, each responding differently to the challenges of expanding tourism. The Svalbard Islands have adopted restrictive policies to limit mass tourism, whereas Greenland is focusing on building new infrastructure to accommodate a growing influx of visitors. These contrasting approaches reflect a delicate balance between environmental protection and economic growth.

At Twissen, we have observed that Arctic tourism is growing, fueled by cultural interest and greater accessibility due to ice melting. However, the sector faces challenges related to sustainability and climate change. Diverging strategies across the Arctic highlight the need to balance economic growth and environmental preservation for a responsible tourism future.

According to the China Tourism Academy (CTA), the Chinese government’s tourism research institute, one of the fastest-growing travel segments is retirees—often referred to as “silver tourists.”

These senior travelers, aged 50 and above, have finished their professional careers and are dedicating more time to travel, creating significant opportunities for the tourism industry to tailor offerings to their specific needs.

As highlighted by the CTA, this segment is expected to reach 100 million active tourists by 2025, with an estimated revenue of $140 billion this year.

According to Jing Daily, data from OTA Ctrip shows that bookings for this segment are increasing by 34% annually. In domestic tourism, nearly 40% of all travelers in 2024 were aged 45 or older.

However, the most significant growth has been in outbound travel, where bookings among this demographic have surged by over 60%, with retirees now accounting for nearly 20% of all outbound tourists.

This demographic prioritizes a high quality of life and personal growth activities. According to the United Nations’ National Committee on Aging, by 2040, senior travelers are expected to account for 50% of all domestic trips.

Key Priorities: Safety and Comfort

FlightAI, Ctrip’s big data aviation platform, reports that 90% of retirees traveled at least once in the first half of 2024.

Top destinations include Japan, the United States, Thailand, and Australia, with a preference for Asian cities among first-time international travelers.

This segment shows a strong interest in private group tours and luxury hotels, spending 30% more on average than other travelers. However, many retirees take advantage of their flexibility to travel off-season, benefiting from lower prices.

For example, in 2024, bookings by travelers over 50 in the week following China’s National Day increased by 20% compared to the previous year, accounting for 64% of weekday travelers.

Adapting the Travel Industry to Senior Travelers

China’s Travel & Tourism sector is adjusting its offerings for senior and affluent travelers by introducing tailored pricing policies, medical staff, and customized itineraries.

Last year, Ctrip launched the “Ctrip Old Friends Club” to provide personalized travel experiences for the over-50 market, while China introduced “Oxygen Trains”—luxury 15-day rail tours through Qinghai, Gansu, and Tibet, complete with onboard medical assistance.

The Shanghai Railway Bureau has also introduced long-distance tourist trains for travelers aged 50-70, while Swiss company Viking Cruises, in collaboration with Shanghai’s University for the Elderly, combines cultural courses with high-end cruises.

The hospitality sector is also embracing this trend: Hilton Hotels, for example, offers discounts for travelers over 65 and organizes wellness activities tailored to senior guests.

At Twissen, we have observed that China’s senior tourism represents a strategic growth opportunity for the industry, with increasing demand for high-quality experiences, comfort, and safety.

The rising number of affluent retirees and their strong spending power are pushing operators to develop tailored offerings, from cultural cruises to luxury train journeys.

Companies that successfully cater to these needs will benefit from a rapidly expanding market, optimizing occupancy rates year-round and driving revenue growth.

The last few years changed the air travel industry perspectives: according to the report “Transformation 2021” by CarTrawler, leisure and business travellers are now reshaping their choice criteria, leading airlines to adapt their business model.

Destination above all
Destination and emotional involvement are becoming crucial in the decision-making process: after long months of pandemic restrictions, travellers feel the need to “be there”. This strengthens the need to protect customers from uncertainty, mainly coming from unstable change fees of air tickets and sudden border closures. As destination is now representing the central feature of the travel product, airlines and travel industry need to work jointly to limit border restrictions.

A turn towards leisure
In this scenario, the leisure segment is growing: major airlines are providing long-haul routes to typical holiday destinations. Finnair, for example, is opening new routes from Stockholm to Phuket (Thailand) and Miami (USA); Brussels Airlines will operate in Arecife (Lanzarote, Spain), Hurghada (Egypt) and Rabat (Morocco). A stated by Jan Derycke, Vice President Ground Operations and Airport Services at Brussels Airlines, booking data show that people are willing to travel again and to book earlier. In this perspective, websites providing travel suggestions and experiences will be more effective than transaction-based websites.

Business class accessible to everyone
As the business segment is still recovering, economic difficulties are preventing companies to spend on expensive business fares. As a result of this, airlines such as Finnair and Emirates started to promote a “basic business” fare accessible both to leisure and business travellers, wo which you can add ancillary services, such as checked baggage. This “mix” of leisure and business travellers is also reported by Business Travel News, underlining a rise in the bleisure segment, in particular through the so-called workations.

Beating uncertainty through new price policies and services
As reported by PhocusWire, airline ancillary revenue is growing. According to the report, airlines are starting to promote “branded” fares (good, better and best) that will guide the consumer towards the middle fare. This will allow airlines to combine a good price with ancillary services, and enhance the revenue as 55% of bookers tend to prefer the “middle” choice and only 5% the cheapest one. In this perspective, an attractive way to conquer travellers’ trust is to include in every fare a travel insurance. Finally, a comeback of buy-on-board food services is also foreseeable, with a focus on local products and sustainability, as it can be perceived as a “return to normal” to travellers.

At Twissen we observed that the current pandemic scenario has changed travellers’ priorities, both in terms of demand for services and in their own decision-making process. Creating fares that efficiently combine price, destination and service, and that cater to both the leisure and business segments is a winning strategy for airlines to meet today’s traveller’s needs and be competitive.

Tourists are ready to travel again, and they dream of it as an unforgettable moment: players of the travel & tourism industry are getting ready to fulfill tourists’ expectations. Recent studies identify the targets of tourists who will be the first to travel again: Hosteltur, in fact, reports that new travel trends are rising and consequently influencing travellers’ habits and destinations’ strategy.

Educational travels: more than studying on books
Last year, students became more and more digital. Now they’re willing to travel again, putting experience first while traveling: experiential learning will become the choice. As vaccination against Covid-19 is proceeding, groups of students are expected to travel together again, preferring off-the-beaten-track tourism destinations where they can try outdoor activities, such as team-building experiences.

Traveling together to create good memories
As we already reported, people are planning to travel with friends or family: since visiting the loved ones during the restrictions was not allowed, traveling together has now become the best way to reunite. So, multi-generational groups are expected to rise as a new strong target, needing accommodations designed for families, large and well-connected common areas as well as experiences aimed at involving the whole family, from children to seniors. As reported by National Geographic, many destinations are proposing sport activities that can be carried out by families, like cycling tours or adventurous Jeep rides.

Outdoor travels to recover body and mind
The pandemic forced people to stay at home, and now tourists are eager to get outside: camping, nature and sport are the keywords, combining coziness, physical exercise and mindfulness. This is the reason why bike tourism is expected to have a great comeback in 2021, as many people started using the bike instead of other means of transport, and it quickly became more than a hobby. Cycling is considered to be the best way to enjoy fresh air, staying fit and having a full immersion in beautiful landscapes. According to EuroBike, Maiorca, Madeira, the Loire Valley and Tuscany appeared to be the dream destination for many bike tourists.
Also film tourism is expected to grow in this trend, as millennials got inspired by recent movies and are now looking for new destinations where to admire beautiful landscapes, spend time in nature and finally visit those “dreamed places” featured in their favorite movies.

Business segment evolving to regain the human interaction
Recently the business travel segment has faced many challenges, as new digital tools are partially replacing physical meetings. However, Hosteltur reports that this segment is expected to recover quickly in Asia and Europe, and almost 40% of European travelers are still expected to go on a business trip in the next 6 months. Business tourism is not expected to disappear, instead, it will experience a strong transformation. Travelers will look for large spaces to meet other professionals, high-quality services and special fares to stay in a destination for a longer period, as people are expected to take more workations.

The year 2020 has brought new business opportunities in the sectors that most were affected by the pandemic, such as the hospitality sector, which is now proving to be flexible and ready to respond to new types of tourism demand.

As we are leaving 2020 behind, we now face positive prospects, and the hospitality industry is questioning the future trends that will help the recovery of the sector. Last year was probably the most difficult and unexpected year to deal with and, as we have already reported, hotellerie had already started to adapt to a new type of local tourism demand.

As Hospitality.net highlights in the analysis of the hotel industry current situation, hygiene standards will continue to be the most required feature. Big hotel chains will probably be the preferred accommodation for city stays, as tourists are likely to consider them as a synonym of cleanness.

At Twissen we observed that 2020 was a challenging year, but an interesting turning point to get ideas from, as new business models and trends that rose during the past year are now to be implemented and consolidated.

A study suggests the policies that the UK could implement to consolidate the tourism sector as a profitable and thriving sector

L'articolo A report outlines UK tourism policies proviene da Twissen.

With the right caution, but strong in a solid and constantly growing tourism sector, the UK Government aims to increase inbound arrivals in the country by 23% by 2025, aiming for European leadership in the hotel industry through the creation of over 130,000 additional beds, 300,000 apprenticeships, a data analysis centre and increased accessibility to tourism.

According to “UK Tourism: 2020 and Beyond” published by Tourism Alliance, however, there are additional policies that should be developed to increase the performance of the sector in the country.

Sustainable tourism development
The report underlines the importance of tourism sustainability, especially in terms of the environment. Supporting initiatives such as Sustainable Aviation through the creation of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel Office would increase the UK’s leadership in this area.

Excellent services with global standards
Given the need to recruit 1.3 million workers, tourism training, as well as academic training, will have to provide language skills, soft skills and tourist reception skills.
Effective immigration policies will have to be put in place to meet the large number of qualified resources and language needs of the sector.

Business tax reform
An inefficient property tax system is getting in the way of the British travel industry, and limiting investment. As a result, certain types of activities (e.g. retail and betting) are migrating online: but this is not possible for many tourist activities, such as hotels, which are penalised.

Rethinking forms of taxation on tourists
The World Economic Forum speaks plainly: the current system of taxation makes the UK the least competitive destination in the world in terms of prices and a reduction in accommodation tax, the elimination of the airline passenger tax and the encouragement of the MICE segment to increase investment and export is proposed.

Obtaining adequate tourist facilities and support
Tourism legislation is considered obsolete and inefficient. It is proposed that VisitEngland, the English Tourist Board, be elevated to national Tourist Board, on a par with VisitScotland and Visit Wales. In this way, VisitBritain could operate internationally, promoting the destination in a unified and competitive global way.

Creating sustainable destinations
The country lacks a body responsible for promoting destinations at sub-national level. The National Tourism Board should therefore have partner DMOs, with independent access to government funds, to work together to develop and promote regional products, and to implement infrastructure that can decentralise tourist flows from the London area.

Investing in rural and maritime areas
Despite playing a key role, tourism in these areas has not yet reached its full potential due to lack of investment. It is essential to develop dedicated Strategic Plans that recognise and support its development.

ETAs to increase arrivals
The lack of homogeneity between the types of visas required to enter the country, together with the high cost of application, hinders international arrivals. The introduction of ETAs (Electronic Travel Authorisations) could improve the experience of tourists, obtaining visas quickly and easily, while increasing national security.

Developing educational tourism
Educational tourism represents a significant slice of British tourism, worth around €31 million a year (£27 million), and could develop more smoothly thanks to the creation of a dedicated body.

Preserving cultural heritage
The importance of Britain’s cultural heritage could be reinforced by an increase in the endowment of the Heritage Maintenance Funds, aimed at conserving these unique resources.

Improving the transport system
The transport and infrastructure system should become more connected to tourism, favouring the most remote areas and favouring electric means of transport, in line with the priorities of social and environmental sustainability.

Safe and legal accommodation
Following the advent of the sharing economy, it is necessary to update the regulations on the subject, so as to ensure safety and legality to national and international tourists.

At Twissen we observed that tourism in Great Britain is facing challenges caused by external factors (such as the current health emergency) and internal factors (such as the recent Brexit). Nevertheless, there is scope to maintain tourism as a thriving and profitable sector, investing in sustainability and openness to internationalisation.

The target group of Muslim travellers requires characteristics and preferences that tourism operators must consider in their offer. What is wrong, however, is the idea that muslim travellers are only men, or that women do not travel unless accompanied by men.

This is clearly highlighted by the Mastercard – CrescentRating report “Muslim Women in Travel 2019” which reports that the number of muslim women who travelled in 2018 was 63 million, out of a total of 140 million muslim travellers. This number is expected to double by 2026. The total annual travel expenditure of this target group of women tourists was about 55 billion euros.

It is an increasing target: at its base there are a growing number of young Muslims with greater economic availability, together with the strengthening of the middle class in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation countries (57 countries in total, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iran, Morocco), as well as greater disposable income at household level.

According to the report, this target has some very distinct characteristics. It is a young target, mostly women between 20 and 40 years old, who make frequent trips (more than 3 per year) and cultural discovery, in line with the travel expectations of the target of millennials.

In the leisure segment, these women often travel with their families but also in small groups, with friends. On top of this, there is a growth in the business segment, which translates into a substantial number of individual female travellers.
The most substantial segment, however, is the leisure segment, which is based on a careful choice of destination. In fact, it must respond to the demand for a feeling of personal security and welcome.

TTG Asia reports that this choice is strongly conditioned by cultural attractiveness: the target is in fact looking for a pop culture, countries rich in history and cultural attractions that allow the sharing of visually impressive content on social networks, a feature that is found more generally in the millennials and Gen-Z.

The mobile-first strategy seems to be winning, as the smartphone is considered a key tool for the travel experience. This should also be taken into account when booking ancillary services, such as car rental, as well as when designing dedicated apps (e.g. indicating the best Halal restaurants in an area). The countries that best meet these requirements are South Korea, New Zealand and Japan.

The report stresses that the tourist offer should take into account the needs dictated by religious beliefs, as muslim women appreciate practicing their faith during their travels. In addition to Halal food services and places reserved for prayer (considered strategic points of the offer), some destinations have taken new initiatives. For example, tour operators in Singapore, the Maldives and Malaysia have provided services for women tourists only, such as spas or all-female gyms. But that’s not all: taking into account the willingness of this target to “make a difference”, an important characteristic of their faith, they have marked the structures and services to social and environmental sustainability and the authenticity of the travel experience.

At Twissen we observed how, once again, customization is the key word to attract this target group of tourists. The attention to detail, the offer of authentic and local travel experiences, but at the same time an eye to technology could be the right strategy for tour operators who want to involve this interesting and growing target.
