{"id":9619,"date":"2022-05-31T09:53:22","date_gmt":"2022-05-31T07:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/twissen.com\/?p=9619"},"modified":"2022-05-31T09:53:22","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T07:53:22","slug":"impacts-russian-ukrainian-conflict-unwto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/twissen.com\/en\/trends-en\/destinations\/impacts-russian-ukrainian-conflict-unwto\/","title":{"rendered":"Impacts of Russian-Ukrainian conflict according to UNWTO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In spring 2022,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwto.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNWTO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webunwto.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/s3fs-public\/2022-03\/UNWTO_Barom22_02_March_excerpt-1.pdf?U1d1hw2v5Ga4TSmloKQRNbFKpr6mNygA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an issue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the ongoing <\/span><b>recovery of world tourism <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since the beginning of the year. Different aspects of the phenomenon were analysed, with special regards to the new uncertainties due to the outbreak of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has to be added to the ongoing travel restrictions and the challenging economic environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as inbound tourism is concerned, there has been a <\/span><b>growth of 130%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January 2022 with respect to 2021 levels. However, there are more and more threats to the tourism recovery, especially where the <\/span><b>military offensive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Russia against Ukraine has severe consequences on the international markets. Among the several effects of the conflict mentioned in the UNWTO Barometer, we identified the most relevant ones:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. The conflict is hampering the return of <\/span><b>confidence in global travel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially regarding travel to Europe.<br \/>\n2. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>shutdown of Ukrainian and Russian airspace<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is affecting intra-European travels.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. The <\/span><b>lack of Russian and Ukrainian consumers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the tourism market could imply a loss of at least $14 billion in tourism receipts.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. The demand for air travels and bookings slowed down after the beginning of the conflict but started <\/span><b>increasing again in early March<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. The <\/span><b>spike in oil prices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not only increasing inflation, but also making transportation and accommodation costs higher, putting pressure on consumers\u2019 purchasing power.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. The projection for <\/span><b>world economic growth <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2022 has downgraded <\/span><b>from 3.6% to 2.6%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making developing countries the most vulnerable to the decrease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><b>Twissen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we observe how countries will have to face both <\/span><b>direct and indirect effects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the war. However, the biggest medium and long term impacts of the conflict on world tourism are still to be seen, since they will depend on its duration and
