In this context, the <strong>rapid strategies adopted by OTAs<\/strong> (Online Travel Agencies) are also developing in order to counter the heavy losses suffered and at the same time not disappointing their customers.<\/p>\n<p>There are <strong>2 macro-categories<\/strong> identified within which the OTAs are taking measures, in a more or less homogeneous way:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cost containment policies<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cancellation policies<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With regard to the first category, <strong>OTA&#8217;s trend is to contain costs<\/strong> by implementing various measures: reductions in the budget allocated to the marketing divisions, as decided by <a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2020\/02\/26\/booking-channels-rival-expedia-and-will-cut-costs-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Booking.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/therealdeal.com\/2020\/03\/30\/airbnb-suspends-marketing-cuts-executive-pay-in-half\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Airbnb<\/a>, which thus plans to save 731 million euros, rather than freezing recruitment. Expedia, on the other hand, still at the end of February had announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelweekly.com\/Travel-News\/Travel-Agent-Issues\/Expedia-cutting-about-3000-jobs?utm_source=eNewsletter&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_campaign=eltrdb&amp;oly_enc_id=5901B3402978I6J\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the dismissal of 3,000 workers<\/a>, or 12% of its workforce, expecting to save between 270 million and 450 million euros.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Expedia has decided to reduce its projects, activities and teams: the American company is <a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2020\/02\/13\/expedia-chairman-barry-diller-rips-his-bloated-company-as-all-life-no-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experiencing a change of direction in internal policies<\/a> due to the new chairman, Barry Diller, who has announced that he wants to &#8220;simplify the entire organization&#8221;. At the same time, Booking.com has also announced the cancellation of internal events and reduced non-essential business travel.<\/p>\n<p>In the second category, <strong>all OTAs had to manage the huge amount of cancellations made by their users<\/strong>, trying not to disappoint anyone. In the context of short rentals, the substantial difference between the <a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2020\/03\/20\/short-term-rental-firms-face-backlash-over-sharply-different-coronavirus-cancellation-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">different management policies<\/a> concerns the choice to financially support either the travellers or the owners of the facilities advertised on the platforms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.co.uk\/help\/article\/2701\/extenuating-circumstances-policy-and-the-coronavirus-covid19?_set_bev_on_new_domain=1585731647_YTMzNDIzZWQxYzA1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>AirBnb<\/strong><\/a><strong> and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rentalsupport.tripadvisor.com\/faq\/view\/About-the-coronavirus-outbreak-COVID-19-for-owners?l=en_GB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tripadvisor<\/strong><\/a><strong> decided to guarantee travellers<\/strong> who had booked a trip between 14 March and 31 May 2020 <strong>a full refund<\/strong> if booked before 14 March. Initially, Airbnb&#8217;s policy aroused the anger of hosts, to which the American giant responded by launching a <strong>237 million euro <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2020\/03\/30\/airbnb-ceo-apologizes-to-hosts-with-a-260-million-relief-package\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>financial aid plan<\/strong><\/a><strong> and a 9 million euro fund dedicated to hosts and superhosts<\/strong> respectively, who suffered heavy economic losses due to cancellations of reservations.<\/p>\n<p>A different policy is adopted instead by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vrbo.com\/discoveryhub\/tips-and-resources\/improve-performance\/covid-19-emergency-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vrbo<\/a>, of the Expedia group and <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.booking.com\/content\/cs.en-gb.html?aid=304142&amp;label=gen173nr-1FEgRoZWxwKIICOOgHSDNYBGikAogBAZgBMbgBB8gBDdgBAegBAfgBBIgCAagCA7gCyPLT8wXAAgE&amp;sid=83e5966c3055937667764405044d32cf&amp;tmpl=docs%2Fcustomer_service&amp;lang=en-gb&amp;soz=1&amp;lang_click=top;cdl=it;lang_changed=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Booking.com<\/a>, who have decided to <strong>let the owner of the structure decide whether or not to make a total or partial refund<\/strong> of the trip, offer alternative dates or issue the classic voucher.<\/p>\n<p>We at <strong>Twissen<\/strong> have observed that the downsizing of some OTAs was already happening before the crisis broke out due to the Coronavirus, which only accentuated this trend.
