The sharing economy in the Travel & Tourism industry has seen an interesting development during the last years, both for the number of tourists using its services and for the sector where it can be applied.\u00a0As we have already reported, these innovative practices in\u00a0the transport sector had\u00a0to face some\u00a0controversies, even if\u00a0its\u00a0services are\u00a0widely\u00a0popular, mainly\u00a0among business travellers<\/a>. Uber<\/a>, in particular, the\u00a0well-known\u00a0ride sharing company, had to face the rules of each Country, given that there is not a shared legislation at a\u00a0European level. The same happened to their “colleagues” of short-rentals companies, such as Airbnb<\/a> and\u00a0Homeaway<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The last\u00a0vicissitudes\u00a0saw\u00a0once again\u00a0Uber in the middle of many debates on its legality, and on the possible complications regarding security and insurance formalities<\/strong>. For example, in Denmark, Uber was officially declared illegal, since it has been considered\u00a0a for-profit company and not\u00a0a real transport service, and the tribunal of the City of Copenhagen fined\u00a0six drivers of the popular\u00a0platform\u00a0for\u00a0about 800 euros. Furthermore, in France, Uber signed a partnership agreement with the insurance company Axa, in order to guarantee more safety both to drivers and passengers. Axa also signed a deal with\u00a0BlaBlaCar<\/a>, while Allianz started a collaboration with Car2Go<\/a>. In Russia, Uber decided to merge with Yandex<\/a>, the popular search engine which also works in the transportation\u00a0market. The new company will worth 3,73bn dollars and\u00a0its\u00a0activity will include 127 cities in 6 Countries (Russia,\u00a0Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia and\u00a0Kazakistan). In Czech Republic, as reported by East Journal<\/a>, a regional court prevented the company from operating in the city of Brno. In Italy, taxi drivers protested after the tribunal of Rome suspended the ordinance that had interrupted the use of the app on the whole national territory.<\/p>\n

At a European level, the European Court of Justice will decide about the future of the ride sharing companies by the end of the year<\/strong>. However, a judge recently\u00a0declared\u00a0that these companies, in particular Uber, shall not be considered as digital platforms but transport companies. Member States can ban or fine them without preventively notify the draft law to the European Commission.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is interesting to analyse the investment round that the\u00a0startup\u00a0Grab<\/a> received,\u00a0a\u00a0Uber competitor operating in the south-east\u00a0Asia\u00a0that received funds for 2.5bn dollars\u00a0from the Japanese bank Softbank and Chinese\u00a0Chuxing, leader in the transport sector in 400 cities in China.<\/p>\n

At\u00a0Twissen\u00a0<\/strong>we observed that the recent legislative evolutions in the sharing economy transport sector haven’t completely clarified the operativity in the European market. Notwithstanding, these companies are still very popular, in particular among specific targets of tourists, such as business and\u00a0bleisure\u00a0travellers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
